Life can be better with a confident smile. Clear aligners straighten teeth using a series of removable, almost invisible plastic trays, without the brackets and wires of traditional braces. Drs. What are clear aligners?
Each aligner is made from a digital 3D scan of your teeth and moves them a fraction of a millimetre. You wear each set for one to two weeks before moving to the next, and your dentist reviews progress every six to eight weeks. Because they are removable, you eat, brush and floss as normal.
Invisalign or ClearCorrect?
Both are established clear aligner systems that use the same principle. They differ in aligner material, trim design and price. After your scan, your dentist will recommend the system that suits the complexity of your case and your budget, and you will see a digital preview of the expected result before you commit.
Who is suitable?
- Adults and teenagers with mild to moderate crowding, spacing, overbite, underbite or crossbite.
- Patients whose teeth have relapsed after earlier braces.
- People who need a discreet option for work or social reasons.
Severe crowding, large bite discrepancies or jaw-position problems may be better treated with fixed braces, sometimes combined with other treatment. Gums and teeth must be healthy before aligners start, so any decay or gum disease is treated first.
How treatment works
- Consultation and scan. A digital scan replaces messy impressions. We check suitability and take photographs and X-rays.
- Digital treatment plan. You see a simulation of how your teeth will move and the number of aligners needed.
- Aligners made. Your custom series is manufactured, typically within two to four weeks.
- Wear and change. Wear each aligner 20 to 22 hours a day, changing sets as instructed. Small attachments may be placed on some teeth.
- Reviews. Short check-ups every six to eight weeks to confirm teeth are tracking.
- Retainers. When the final position is reached, retainers hold the result.
How long does it take?
Simple cases can finish in six months; most take 9 to 18 months. Wearing aligners for the full 20 to 22 hours a day is the biggest factor in staying on schedule.
What does it cost?
The fee depends on the number of aligners and the complexity of your case, and includes the scan, planning, reviews and a first set of retainers. You will receive a written quotation after your consultation. Ask your clinic about payment arrangements.
Caring for your aligners
Rinse them whenever you take them out, clean them morning and night with a soft brush and mild soap or the cleaning crystals supplied, keep them in their case when not in your mouth, and never expose them to hot water.
Clear aligner questions
Do clear aligners hurt?
You will feel pressure for a day or two each time you change to a new aligner, which shows the teeth are moving. It is much milder than braces and settles quickly.
Can I eat and drink with aligners in?
Take them out to eat and to drink anything other than water, then brush before putting them back. Hot or coloured drinks can warp or stain the aligners.
Will aligners affect my speech?
A slight lisp is common in the first few days and disappears as your tongue adjusts.
How many hours a day must I wear them?
20 to 22 hours. Wearing them less slows treatment and can stop the teeth tracking with the plan.
What if I lose or break an aligner?
Contact your clinic straight away. You may be asked to wear the previous or next aligner while a replacement is made.
Are clear aligners really invisible?
They are very discreet. Small tooth-coloured attachments are sometimes bonded to teeth to help movement; these are barely noticeable.
What happens after treatment?
Teeth naturally try to drift back, so you will wear retainers, usually full-time for a few months and then at night, to keep your new smile.
